Raising student’s aspirations to fulfill their potential and be the very best of their abilities is key to measuring the success of Cyafarthfa High School according to its new Headteacher.
Lyndon Brennan has taken the reins of the Merthyr Tydfil secondary school following a long career in both industry and education.
The Bridgend-born father-of-four has a clear vision for the future of the valleys’ school and how, with the support of staff and parents, they can create ethical, global citizens of the future who are not afraid to reach for the stars and aspire to be the very best of themselves.
“Historically, Merthyr Tydfil has been a global powerhouse of industry that molded men and women who both inspired others and aspired for a better life,” he said..
“Whether its business or sport, culture or politics, few towns in Wales can boast such a plethora of figures and our students have the potential to achieve just as much if not better.
“It is our duty to nurture the next generation. My vision to develop pupils in to ethical citizens that can make a positive contribution to society and make good decisions for their own lives.”
Following a lengthy international career in various industries which saw him travel extensively as a director of the Corus group, Mr Brennan followed a teaching career in business and economics. Over the years he was Assistant Headteacher of Maesteg Comprehensive School before becoming Deputy Headteacher of Llanishen High School in Cardiff.
With experience of running a valley-based or city-centre school, Mr Brennan’s knowledge and experiences put him in good stead for a future headship.
“I had long-since known of the reputation of Cyfartha High School and was longing to fulfill a personal challenge to become a headteacher which is what initially drew me here,” he explained.
“This is a very good school with excellent staff and students and I am prepared to make changes where necessary so we can provide an even better environment for us all – but particularly for our students who deserve the best opportunities to be inspired, supported and nurtured for the future.”
It is also Mr Brennan’s vision to work with the community on joint projects that not only enhances the reputation of the school but offers more opportunities to its students and neighbours.
He sees this as a collective vision involving staff, students and families alike who work together for their mutual benefit.
He added: “There will be a greater focus on sustainability, a subject close to the hearts of many, not least the new King who has long-since advocated the need for us to truly accept the impact we all have on the environment.
“In doing so we’ll place the school at the very heart of the community where we can share skills and knowledge, support local causes sand forge strong links with organisations and individuals within the area.”
With strong support from his senior leadership team. Mr Brennan’s clear vision for the future remains focused very firmly on the students themselves.
“Collectively we will fulfill our obligations to provide a wide and diverse curriculum which in turn helps to create ethical, informed adults.
“This is an exciting time for education in Wales and for Cyfarthfa High School and I look forward to seeing it continue to flourish as a first-class education provider in south Wales.”
